Data, Ethics, and Society: Join the Conversation in 2025

The Data Ethics and Society Reading Group has been sparking
conversations about the ethical and societal implications of data,
technology, and artificial intelligence (AI) since 2020. Open to
colleagues across the UK public sector, the group provides a
collaborative space to explore critical literature, debate emerging
issues, and connect with others.

As we approach our fifth year, it’s clear that what was a
somewhat niche interest is now a mainstream topic. From AI chatbots in the workplace to concerns about algorithmic bias in
decision making, discussions once reserved for specialists are
now aired in public. Those of us responsible for delivering public
services are under increasing pressure to figure out how data-
drive tools, including AI, can deliver impact for the public, safely
and responsibly.

This reading group offers a chance to step back from day-to-day
work and engage more deeply with the ethical challenges of
data-driven technologies (including AI), supported by thought-
provoking books and the perspectives of colleagues across the
public sector.

So, what’s changing in 2025? And how can you get involved?

What Is the Data Ethics and Society Reading Group?

The reading group started with a simple idea: to create a space
where people across government could come together to critically
engage with data ethics. Over the years, we’ve explored books
and articles that challenge assumptions, provide historical context
to emerging tools and systems, and offer fresh perspectives on
the impact of data and AI.

Each session is a facilitated discussion where we split into
groups. Attendees can share insights, ask questions, and think
about how the material connects to their work. Importantly, it’s not
about arriving at a single “right” answer—it’s about building a
habit of critical thinking and reflection in a supportive
environment.

Why Are We Making Changes?

To ensure the reading group remains relevant and accessible, we
recently sought feedback from some of our newsletter
subscribers. The responses highlighted what participants value
most:

● A shared motivation to engage with ethical issues that
might otherwise get lost in busy work schedules.
● A safe, informal space to explore ideas and connect with
like-minded colleagues.
● Content directly relevant to their professional roles and
the wider challenges facing society.

But participants also pointed to challenges:

● Time constraints, both in reading the material and
attending sessions.
● Cost barriers, as many books can be expensive.
● A desire for deeper discussions, as one session per
book often feels too short to cover everything.

What’s New for 2025?

With this feedback in mind, we’re introducing the following
changes:

  1. Fewer Books, More Focus
In 2025, we’ll read two books instead of four. For each
book, we’ll host two sessions, each exploring different
discussion points. You can attend one or both sessions,
depending on your schedule and interests.
  2. A New Spin-Off Journal Club
For those looking to dive even deeper, the Data and AI
    Ethics Community
(which we are part of) is launching a
journal club. This will focus on emerging academic
literature and thought leadership, offering an opportunity
    for more specialised discussions.
  3. Book Selection Process
We get so many great suggestions of material to cover that
it can be hard to choose what’s next, as we can’t read
every book! On our website you can find a full list of the
14(!) books we have discussed in the group so far.
We have to ensure content remains fresh and relevant, but
doesn’t ignore the continuing appeal of the absolute
classics. This year, we will read and review books in our
shortlist before selecting one for our events. Over
Christmas we read Supremacy by Parmy Olson,
Unmasking AI by Joy Buolamwini, and AI Snake Oil by
Arvind Narayanan. After considerable debate, we will be
discussing Supremacy for our first meeting of 2025.

Why Join the Reading Group?

The ethical challenges of data and AI are growing more complex
every day. By joining the reading group, you’ll have the chance
to:

● Stay informed about critical issues shaping the future of
technology.
● Engage with diverse perspectives from across the public
sector.

● Build connections with colleagues who share your interest
in data ethics.

You don’t need to be a subject matter expert to join—just an open
mind and a willingness to learn.

2024 Wrapped

This year, we’ve read:

● Technology Is Not Neutral by Stephanie Hare
● Dark Data by David Hand
● Code Dependent by Madhumita Murgia
● The Alignment Problem by Brian Christian
